Frank Swettenham

Year

1921

Description
The sculpture of ‘Frank Swettenham’ clearly gives an indicator of the existence of colonialists in Malaysia. The British hailed these figures as local heroes rather than as colonizers. The sculpture of “Frank Swettenham” is fully carved dressed as an English resident, wearing a hat with his right hand holding a book and his left hand holding the hilt of a sword. Such a posture is known as contrapposto and clearly portrays the arrogance and egoism of a colonizer The statue was erected to commemorate his service in Malaya and its construction was funded through donations from his friends and acquaintances. The statue was initially erected at the end of the Selangor State Secretary's office building, overlooking Kuala Sungai Gombak and Sungai Kelang was inaugurated on 19 January 1921. During the Japanese Occupation, the statue was moved but was re -placed on 15 October 1946 and later transferred to the National Museum.

IPOH: PERAK has unveiled the “Ipoh Mural Art” trail map which showcases the artworks in seven locations in the city here. This two hour-long trail will cover places from Jalan Tun Sambanthan to Jalan Bandar Timah-Jalan Panglima-Jalan Bijeh Timah-Jalan Market and Jalan Sultan Iskandar, before ending at Jalan Masjid. Most of the mural arts are drawn by local artists Eric Lai, Bryan Tan, Chris Chow and Mohd Najib Zainudin. Even the famed Ernest Zacharevic from Lithuania had contributed his efforts in creating a mural piece for Ipoh.
